Antioxidants

Antioxidants are the molecules of natural or synthetic origin that prevent, delay or neutralize the negative effects of oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Microalgae being photosynthetic organisms like that of higher plants are the richest natural source of antioxidants.

Bio-colorants

Bio-colorants are the pigments produced by living organisms including microalgae. These pigments absorb specific wavelengths of visible-light while reflecting a different wavelength of light. Therefore, depending on the nature of reactions with light, the color of each pigment varies.

Bio-cosmetics

It’s neither a ‘fancy-word’ nor ‘new-word’ to the cosmetics world but the applications of microalgal ingredients for making cosmetic products is in its infancy. Cosmetics products may include creams, lotions, powders, perfumes, lipsticks, shampoos etc. that may be used for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance of human beings without affecting the body's structure or any functions.

Bio-energy

Microalgal biomass is a potential source for biofuels and bioenergy production. The CO2 fixed by microalgae during photosynthesis are converted mainly into macromolecules lipid, carbohydrate and proteins. First two macromolecules serve as the principal source for biofuels and energy generation. Biofuels could be liquid, gas or solid fuels such as biodiesel, bioethanol, biogas and biohydrogen.
